Judith Basin County Fairboard Minutes

10-26-17

Call to order by Powell Becker @ 6:15 pm.  Dawnita Sampsel, Sigrid Deegan, Bruce Neumann, Powell Becker, and Katie Hatlelid present.

Minutes were approved as presented.

Treasurers report – we are in the red in our budget as of right now due to the bills being paid for the barn.  We have applied for more grant funds to offset this.

No announcements or public comment

Old Business

Fairgrounds Improvements

-          Barn Expansion – building phase complete enough for use by the fair, panels bought and used successfully.  May have to investigate providing plywood for the pen floors for easier cleanup.

o   Funding – Strand Foundation and JB Endowment have been applied to for further funding to finish the new barn.  Any excess funds will be put towards future upgrades for the other two barns.

Fair Wrap Up

-          Scale Certification – having the scale inspected right before the weigh in was a good solution.  There were no negative comments on the scales accuracy that were reported this year.  We will put that on the schedule annually going forward.

-          Auctioneer – the sale went well, Jayson Shobe and Jeff Jedlicka shared duties this year and the sale went very well.

-          Meat Delivery – late delivery to Geyser, discussion on how to avoid this in the future.

New Business

Processing options – discussion took place about other options for processing.  Three options were presented, more discussion to continue at the next meeting.

Stillwater is willing to bring the meat to Harlo or Eddie’s Corner if we bring a trailer to them.                          Most buyers are happy with their product.   They will continue to take delivery Saturday night.

Big Timber is willing to deliver to Eddies Corner, but will not take animals Saturday night.

Other options include sending animals to different packers, this would complicate the carcass contest.

School Exhibits – Sigrid reported that the consolidation talks are nearing a vote for Hobson and Moore schools.  If the consolidation happens, the grade school will be in Moore, which is in Fergus County.  The question being, would the grade school exhibits still be eligible for entry in the JB County fair if the grade school is not in the county?

No immediate issues were foreseen, but more discussion will continue next meeting.

Next meeting date – January 22nd at 6 PM in Stanford

Meeting adjourned at 7:25 pm
